Women’s boxing more technical than men and less brutal

LONDON — People who think boxing is too violent would like Olympic boxing, particularly the women. There are very few knockdowns, even fewer knockouts. The headgear is massive. So are the gloves. Also, the women’s game is much more technical. It really is a clash of strategies rather than brute savagery.

“The women are more disciplined than most of the men,” U.S. assistant coach Charles Leverette said. “Across the board, boxing is boxing but women do listen a little bit better and try to execute over the guys. Some of the guys have their ways and they have their ways. And women are a little more acceptable.”

Then I asked a dumb question: Why do you say that?

“We lost (all the men) before we got to the medal round,” he said.
