London — I love how the medals ceremony for the men’s marathon is always held during the closing ceremonies. Tonight I happened to be sitting next to a Ugandan journalist as he watched countryman Stephen Kiprotich receive his gold.
“In my life I have seen one Olympic medal (for Uganda), in 1996,” said Ahmed Hussein, referring to a bronze in the 400 meters by Davis Kamoga in a race won by Michael Johnson.
He was so proud, and I was so happy for my new friend. Loved hearing him sing the Ugandan national anthem.
What a moment.
