London — So I’m sitting in the Olympic Stadium two hours before the closing ceremonies, writing my last story of the Games. The stadium is empty and final rehearsals are going on. I’ve got my head down, tapping on the laptop, being entertained by a variety of music.
All of a sudden, I hear the distinctive first three chords of one of my favorite songs by my favorite band when I was a kid. The Who is playing “Baba O’Riley” in sound check. Not a recording — they’re on stage.
I won’t go on and on about what a thrill it was. Suffice to say that was my band as a kid. I saw them in my first concert in 1967 when I was 13 and they were on their first American tour.
Turns out The Who will play “Baba O’Riley,” “See Me Feel Me” and “My Generation” to close tonight’s show and the London Games. I hope NBC shows it, because my son back in Denver will LOVE it.
Spice Girls will perform, too, by the way.
